In November 2025, 20 + trainers chose from weanlings and yearlings to foster and gentle those youngsters. All Mustangs in this particular program are from Colorado ranges, namely Little Bookcliffs and Sand Wash Basin. Rubrics to be met by adoption day for the yearlings, which is Luna's "group": haltered, lead, pick up feet, load in the trailer. Trainers have worked through the last 4 months to prepare the horses for adoption March 28, 2026 at the Mesa County Fairgrounds in Grand Junction CO.
Born in the Sand Wash Basin in Colorado to Ivy and SIRE in April 2024. She was "bait trap" captured in July 2025. On range, there is water in ponds, grazing as you go, and miles and miles of open range (sans fencing for long distances). And ZERO expectations from humans. Photos of her range life below.
Luna has achieved so much since coming to Steadfast Steeds in November 2025. From the beginning she has presented as curious, smart and friendly. She also has not been so accepting of touch with a hand. Rubrics to be met have taken more time than anticipated, and, she has come SO FAR since the day she arrived. Following are the "things" she participates in willingly: meets two-leggeds at the gate, whinnies at feeding time, stables well alone or with other horses, makes friends with other horses easily, drinks from a bucket, rubber tub and large water trough, can eat from a bucket, rubber tub (netted hay), follows willingly, can be sorted easily, moves through gates, and self-loads into the trailer.
About 5 days after her arrival, Luna manifested a snotty nose. Ten days of antibiotics did not clear it. And, in about 3 weeks it resolved. In my experience, antibiotics disrupt the natural flora absolutely necessary for equine digestion. Luna has rub "spots" in a couple of places. Dewormer was utilized to address. As the rub "spots" continue, gut health was considered. Luna is receiving probiotic, fiber, soaked alfalfa/grass cubes and omega 3. She is eating straight grass hay and drinks plenty of fresh water.

Such a sweet filly

Watch Luna load herself in the trailer!
Trailer gentling at Steadfast Steeds begins with curious exploration. The horse receives hay in the stabilized trailer and they eventually step in to eat. It helps them become familiar with sounds and space of the trailer without expectations. Luna is a quick study! She figured it out in less than 12 hours!
Luna is a very special Mustang filly! She is gentle, willing and curious. And, she has yet to achieve all the rubrics to be accomplished. She continues to be a little reactive, ticklish, jumpy, whatever one wants to call it. She will need an advanced adopter to help her continue to come out of her shell. Steadfast Steeds can provide 6 foot fence and additional training. Visit with us about it at the event or by giving us a call 970.241.0939
Steadfast Steeds intends to donate 10% of proceeds gained from Luna's adoption back to the Colorado Foster to Adopt program.
Yay Luna! Be wildly blessed!
P.S. Thank you to Stacy McClure for her WILD photos of young Osage (Luna)
